Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by a mutation in the beta-globin gene, leading to the production of abnormal hemoglobin. This causes red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, restricting blood flow and contributing to painful vaso-occlusive events (VOEs), progressive organ damage, and shortened life expectancy.
Historically, treatment has focused on addressing symptoms rather than the underlying cause.
